Thai Ambassador Prasas Prasasvinitchai returned back to Cambodia last week after he was recalled to Thailand nearly 10 months. Thailand recalled Mr. Prasas from Phnom Penh last November after Mr. Thaksin’s appointment was made public
Answering to the reporters’ questions, Mr. Prasas replied that he was happy to come back to Cambodia .
Foreign Minister spokesman Koy Kuong and CPP lawmaker Cheam Yeap said yesterday that Mr. Prasas’s arrival came after earlier concerns with Cambodia government that Thailand might break a promise on the pledge to bring back its envoy.
Thai Foreign ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi said that Thai government was grateful that Mr. Thaksin could not work for Cambodia government because he involved with corruption offenses in absentia. Moreover, he is currently facing with terrorism charges.
“Even though we recalled the ambassador earlier, our embassy continued to work,” Mr. Thani said. “But with our ambassador back, it will help the communication between both sides to be improved,” he added.
Political analysts believe that the restoration of full diplomatic relations will help Cambodia and Thailand make progress on improving their bilateral relations, especially in regard to their long-running dispute over border territory near Cambodia ’s world heritage-listed Preah Vihear temple.
Pavin Chachavalpongpun, lead researcher for political a strategic affairs at the Asean Studies Center , said that the nature of the neighbors’ relationship made it hard to predict.
“Hopefully, both countries will make use of this chance to resolve their difference, through diplomatic means, rather than political,” Mr. Pavin said.
