Awesome post, thanks! I am concerned that under “Nutrition and Benefit”, Fluted Pumpkin seems to be categorized with other Squashes and Pumpkins. I only know that (1)the leaves are used in a variety of soups and pottages, (2) the seeds are eaten when cooked and peeled and (3) the rest of it comprising the thick hard shell and the squishy fruity inside is used as manure. Please clarify, Thanks again.

    A few observations:
First, I have always learned that the roots of fluted pumpkin are poisonous, perhaps very poisonous. You might want to verify that.

Secondly, the fluted pumkin seeds, the ones that are still tender can and are usually eaten. How? You know whether it is still tender to eat by trying to break the bumps on the “Gourd”, that is the pumpkin. If it is still tender, the seeds inside will likely be tender to eat too. Break open the pumpkin, take out the seeds (the same as the ones that are planted) and cook them in a pot with water and salt for about 40 minutes to 1 hour. Its ready to eat. Break open the coat covering the seed. There is a tender, white seed well cooked inside and that is what you eat. I have eaten it many times. You can try it.

Lastly, it is difficult to plant fluted pumpkin in regions with frost/winter weather conditions. It doesnt give the plants enough breeding and growing seasons to produce the pumpkin seeds “gourd”. It is still so much fun to plant it to enjoy the leaves in edikang ikong soup. By the way, I planted some this season and they are doing so very well, very leafy, no fruit, no flower either. Am enjoying the leaves. I can help anyone who needs help, I hope.
