1 Killed, 5 Hurt in East Timor Clashes

A battle between rival gangs armed with machetes killed one fighter
and injured five others in East Timor's capital, police and hospital
officials said Thursday.

International peacekeepers fired tear gas and rubber bullets during
the violence late Wednesday to disperse the gangs as they fought
near the presidential palace, witnesses said.

Manuela Gaio, a nurse at Dili's main hospital, said the body of one
fighter and four wounded men were taken to the hospital. Another
injured man was treated at a nearby clinic, an official there said.

East Timor was plunged into crisis in May when rival security forces
battled in Dili's streets, later spilling into gang warfare, looting and
arson that left 30 people dead and sent nearly 150,000 fleeing from
their homes.

A new government was installed in July, which along with the presence
of foreign troops led by a contingent of Australian soldiers, has largely
eased tensions.

Sporadic gang fights have continued and tens of thousands of people
still live in refugee camps, either too scared to return home or unable
to do so because their houses were destroyed in the turmoil. -end-
